Commandment Highlight : Honour thy Father and thy Mother

Exodus 20:12

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

The Most High God of Israel commanded us to love and honor our parents. Even as a youngster who wasn't aware of the commandments, I knew that having the upmost respect for my parents was a requirement. Luckily for me, the fear of my parents was instilled in me at an early age. Despite the fact that my parents are not in this truth, I give all praises to The Most High that my parents molded me into the adult that I've become. Its an unfortunate fact that many of our people didn't have any type of relationships with their parents or have grown to hate them. As you leave the world and get into this truth however, you will learn how imprtant it is to keep this commandment to heart and to do it...

This commandment hits home especially for those who are in this truth without the support of their parents. Speaking for myself, my parents have not accepted this truth so far and I've learned to accept that. If it be the LORD's will, they will eventually wake up. In the meantime I've learned to continue to have a level of love and respect for my parents, which can be quite difficult due to many different spirits (wordly vs. spiritual) trying to interact with each other. Although we may not see eye-to-eye with most things, it is important for me to keep this commandment now that I am in this truth, especially knowing the consequences of not doing so. If I'm not willing to honor my parents, it shows that I don't honor the Most High and HIS Son.

For those who are struggling to be at peace with your parents, keep reading the scriptures and pray on it. With all sincerity, pray asking for strength and guidance and pray for your parents, hoping that they will repent. Never loose patience or your temper with them, that's what Satan wants. Once you give in to Satan it can become difficult to turn back to righteousness. However, you are still allowed to repent and to get back on track; striving to do better next time around.

I think the biggest blessing is have parents who are in the truth with you. If they are following the commandments to the best of their ability, its a wonderful thing to be able to learn from their actions and experiences. That is something that I look forward to whenever its time for me to be a mother; loving my children according to the laws of God so that in return they will love and honor me and my husband.

Tips on Honoring thy Father and thy Mother:

  • Obeying them (as long as it doesn't cause you to break the commandments).
  • Not cursing them
  • Not hitting or attacking them
  • Helping them when they are in need
  • Loving them according to the scriptures
  • Telling them the truth at all times
  • Not stealing from them
  • Not having hatred or evil thoughts towards them
  • Openly rebuking them according to the scriptures (there's an art to this lol)
